Pizza in the Park: How Two Black Philly Creatives Are Building Sisterhood One Slice at a Time

What Happens When Creativity, Sisterhood, and Community Collide?

You get Pizza in the Park, a soul-enriching event that started as a spontaneous idea and has grown into a celebration of Black excellence, collaboration, and joy. In this episode of “Black by Nature, Philly by Choice, I sit down with Philly creatives Melissa and Dominique to share the inspiring journey behind this community-driven event.

The Origin of Pizza in the Park

What began as an impromptu idea over pizza and margaritas has blossomed into a cherished tradition.

“I needed something quick for content,” Melissa recalls “My dear friend came up with the name ‘Pizza in the Park,’ and it just clicked.”

Initially meant to be a small, intimate gathering, it quickly evolved into something much bigger. The first Pizza in the Park drew 30-40 women—close friends and friends of friends—for a laid-back day filled with laughter, food, and connection.

“It was just for fun,” Melissa added, “but then we realized, this is a thing. A real thing.”

Today, the event is a biannual affair, bringing together community, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

Collaboration Over Competition: The Power of Sisterhood

What makes Pizza in the Park stand out is the strong bond between Melissa and Dominique, who met at a networking event and instantly clicked.

“I pushed myself to go, and I told myself, ‘I’m going to connect with 10 women in this space,'” Melissa shared.

That intention led to a meaningful partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared goals.

In a world where competition often takes center stage, Pizza in the Park proves that collaboration is the real key to success. Melissa’s eye for aesthetics and Dominique’s talent for engagement perfectly complement each other, creating an event that’s not just about pizza—but about empowering women and creating lasting memories.

Turning Challenges Into Wins

Every great endeavor comes with its challenges, and Pizza in the Park is no exception. From unpredictable weather to logistical hurdles, Melissa and Dominique have faced it all.

“It’s called Pizza in the Park, so you have to be prepared for whatever happens in the park.”

Melissa said, reflecting on a rainy September event that tested their resilience.

Despite setbacks, they’ve remained committed to delivering an unforgettable experience.

“You have to make a pivot in business,” Dominique emphasized.

Whether it’s adjusting the schedule or rethinking the setup, their ability to adapt has been key to their success.

Creating Impact Through Intentionality

At its core, Pizza in the Park is about more than food and fun; it’s about fostering a sense of community and belonging.

“I love seeing people connect and just be present,” Dominique shared. “For some, being there is ministry—being able to release, relax, and connect with others.”

Melissa echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of creating an environment where everyone feels seen and celebrated.

“When you look good and feel good, you behave well,” she said. “We want everyone to feel like a star, even if it’s just for a moment.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs and Creatives

For those looking to follow a similar path, Melissa and Dominique shared some valuable insights:

  • Be Intentional: Walk into every room with a purpose. Whether it’s meeting one new person or simply getting comfortable in a space, small steps lead to big wins.
  • Just Do It: Don’t let overthinking hold you back. Trust your instincts and take action, even if it’s not perfect.
  • Focus on Impact: Ask yourself, “What difference am I trying to make?” Whether it’s through business or community work, aim to create something meaningful.
  • Find Your People: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who inspire and uplift you.

“Get in the room, even if you’re just observing,” Melissa advised.

The Future of Pizza in the Park

As the event continues to grow, Melissa and Dominique are exploring new ways to elevate the experience. From potential venue changes to expanding their reach, the possibilities are endless. One thing remains constant: their commitment to creating a space where people can come together, feel good, and celebrate life.
