What I Learned from My First New York Fashion Week Event: Carving Your Own Lane in Fashion

Last Monday, I attended Kéla Walker’s “How to Carve Your Own Lane: Fashion Innovators” event during New York Fashion Week to see my longtime favorite, Monroe Steele. As I continue on this content creation journey, I’ve realized how important it is to be in the room—to fuel my creativity by surrounding myself with other like-minded individuals and putting myself in environments that reflect where I aspire to be.

Fashion has always been a passion of mine, and attending New York Fashion Week has been a long-time goal. In the past, work obligations kept me from going, but with my schedule now more flexible—and the event being free—it felt like the perfect time to invest in myself and learn from women who are already where I want to be someday.

The event took place at Samsung 837, featuring fashion innovators Monroe Steele, Candace Marie, Asia Milia, and Amiraa Vainqueur, with Kéla Walker as the moderator.

7 Takeaways

  1. Show up as yourself. Authenticity is key.
  2. Be intentional. Approach everything with purpose.
  3. Be and offer value. As a fashion creator, give all the details—size, fit, fabric, etc.—so your audience can truly connect with your content.
  4. Work smarter, not harder. In Kéla Walker’s words, “Would you rather pick up 10 pennies or 1 dime?”
  5. “Stop looking for something special on social media when you’re the something special.” — Candace Marie
  6. Collaboration and community over competition. As Amiraa Vainqueur said, the only things you should gatekeep are your man and your therapist—wise words I wholeheartedly agree with.
  7. If they can do it, so can I. Seeing these women succeed only strengthens my belief that it’s possible for me too.

I hope these takeaways from my first New York Fashion Week event inspire you as much as they did me! Are you ready to carve your own lane? Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments below! And don’t forget to subscribe for more of my adventures and style insights.
