Part 2: Navigating Black Hair & Identity

Every hairstyle tells a story. Some days, my coils make me feel unstoppable. Braids remind me of my roots. A wig? That’s my quick-change cape—perfect for when I need a switch-up or just don’t feel like doing my hair. A twist-out feels like freedom, a bun is sleek and simple, and a head-wrap always crowns me as queen.

But here’s the thing—sometimes the story shifts when other people get involved.

I can walk outside feeling beautiful in a style I love, and then hear, “You should wear your hair like this all the time.” Suddenly, that one comment sticks. The compliments start guiding my choices, and I catch myself wondering:

Am I really picking this look for me… or am I doing it for them?

That’s the weight so many of us carry with our crowns. It’s not just about the hair, it’s about agency. It’s about reminding ourselves that validation from others can feel good, but it shouldn’t define how we show up.

Because truth is, our hair is personal. It’s ours. It’s not up for debate, and it’s not up for control.

If I want curls on Monday, a bun on Tuesday, and a wig on Friday—that’s my business. And it should always be yours too.
