Part 3: Navigating Wash Days, Protective Styles & Showing Up Anyway

Let’s be real: there’ve been times I skipped out on plans because my hair wasn’t “done.” Not because I didn’t want to go, but because I didn’t feel presentable. If you’ve ever canceled on a friend or avoided being seen because your wash day wasn’t lining up, then you already know this struggle.

But here’s the truth: life keeps moving. And I had to learn how to move with it.

For me, that meant getting resourceful. A headwrap. A sleek ponytail. A wig that saves the day. These became my quick saves—not because I didn’t care about how I looked, but because I did care about showing up for the people I love.

This part of the series is about liberation from perfectionism. Black hair is beautiful in every stage—freshly twisted, wrapped in a scarf, or laid under a wig cap. Every version still deserves to take up space.

It’s not about showing up unkempt. It’s about refusing to let hair dictate whether you belong in a moment. Because you do. Always.
